Consider the gender you’re trying to attract with your dating profile.

The journey of finding the right kind of person for yourself begins with you selecting a username that is clear, easy to remember, quirky/fun, and positive.

With millions of singles crawling through various dating sites and apps, looking for a potential match, your username is the first thing they'll come across; reading it will give them a first impression.

"Those embarking on this medium can use the evidence-based approach from the outset," the researchers wrote.

"Those already registered should update the profile.

Screen names beginning in the top half of the alphabet may spell success in dating, according to the researchers. researchers have previously described this phenomenon as "alphabetical discrimination," and note that lists are often in alphabetical order.

That’s because high achievers with names nearer to the beginning of the alphabet have been linked to educational attainment and higher incomes. "Those in the lower quarter of the alphabet will be lost in the bottom of the pile if you start at the top," the Queen Mary and University of Texas team wrote. Negative associations from words such as "Little" or “Bugg" should be avoided in screen names, the British and American researchers said, though they said playful-sounding names such as "Fun2bwith" appeared to be effective.

Have fun with your screen name, but avoid being vulgar or cocky.

Stay away from names that denote wealth or immaturity. Craig Wax, senior vice president at Match.com, recommends "coming up with a name that gives an indication of what you are all about.

Try not to typecast yourself with a username that indicates a niche hobby or interest.

It may help you meet like-minded people, but think of all the people who won’t pick you just because they don’t share that one interest. Researchers were surprised to discover that this usually backfires with both sexes: At worst, people think you’re lying; at best, they think you’re materialistic.

Your handle might even affect the results of your job search or dating profile if it refers to something racy or inappropriate.
